Inhaltsbeschreibung: Osteoarthritis of the 1st CMC joint of the hand is a common condition which affects a large part of the (predominantly) female population above 50 years of age. We will focus on the anatomy of the affected joints, the pathophysiology of the disease and discuss methods of decreasing the pain prior to surgery.
The emphasis will be on exercises to increase both the stability as well as the mobility of the affected joints. The exercise programme will be discussed and demonstrated. There will be ample opportunity to try out each exercise, making use of exercise sheets. Although the exercises cannot cure the disease, our experience is that the increased stability and strength of the thumb helps to postpone surgical intervention. In addition to the exercise programme, a limited number of thumb splints will be demonstrated. One or two basic surgical interventions will be discussed and combined with an explanation of suggested post-operative care.
Osteoarthritis of the IP joints of the hand is also very common among ladies over 60 years of age. Common surgical interventions include joint arthroplasties and joint arthrodesis. Rehabilitation after these interventions will be discussed and suggestions provided for treatment methods that have proved to be successful in the past.
